Rooftop Space Design

With warmer weather on the horizon, we are excited to spend more time outside enjoying the fresh Spring air! But where can you go for a deep breath in a busy city? With apartment living at an all-time high, rooftop spaces have become an important selling feature in the overall residential design. Rooftop spaces are popular in places where there are views of mountains, forests and water, but we have seen many high-rises pop up in urban areas where residents can escape the hustle and bustle to take in the city’s views. Here at Sensory Six, we are excited to expand our clients’ living spaces vertically. Why? Below is what we’re loving about these communal spaces.

Take a deep breath. Open-air rooftops are all the rave. They are the perfect setting for meeting up with friends, reading a good book, or soaking up some sun. The top floor offers a cool breeze and muffled sounds from the surroundings, allowing for great conversation or a calming moment for yourself. Take the elevator up to the residents-only rooftop bar and lounge at The Seychelle Luxury Oceanfront Residences in Santa Monica. The Seychelle’s ninety-three exclusive residences are nestled along Santa Monica’s iconic shore with every detail celebrating serenity and simplicity.

Go green. In most open-air rooftops, you'll find yourself surrounded by greenery. We are loving the use of greenery to make rooftop spaces have a garden vibe. Plants create a Zen, relaxing environment where guests will want to spend their afternoons. Not only will plants keep you cool, their natural aura creates privacy and intimacy as well. This wrap-around NYC roof garden design in the West Village features a custom-built planters made of red cedar and filled with a lush mix of evergreens and flowers. In a city nicknamed the “Concrete Jungle”, these sought after spaces are a major perk for apartment owners and renters.

Take cover. Rooftop sanctuaries use canopies to add character to its space. Not only are they visually appealing, but they prove convenient when shielding from bright sun or a light rain. Canopies creates a charming and cozy atmosphere that will have you feeling right at home. Chicago Green Design, Inc. took weather into consideration when designing this Zen rooftop in Chicago. Built-in furniture and planters were used in place of freestanding elements, which are less stable and can blow over in the wind.

Dim the lights. Whereas indoor retreat rooms have constant, steady light all day, a rooftop space’s lighting changes throughout the day. When the sun is overhead, canopies provide shade and not much additional lighting is needed. When the sun goes down, pendant lights, lanterns and candles are great ways to achieve the perfect lighting for your space. Lakeview Sculptural Rooftop + Garden in Chicago, designed by dSpace Studio is a calming space with textured landscaping. A unique detail is the use of Plexiglas risers on the steps to the lounge. During the day, the Plexiglas risers create the aesthetic of a floating lounge. At night, lighting concealed behind the risers creates a linear lightbox, a detail that is both artistic and functional.

Take in the views. Rooftop sanctuaries align their seating in such a way that everyone can enjoy the surrounding area and its scenery. You'll notice that tables and chairs or lounge seating is aligned around the edges of the terrace so views aren’t obstructed. This rooftop outdoor terrace at Sugar in Hong Kong has long been a post-work hangout. With its comfy lounge chairs and unique views of Victoria Harbour, what’s not to love?
